Metronidazole Gel
Introduction
Composition
Uses
- Rosacea: Metronidazole Gel is used to treat inflammatory lesions (such as papules and pustules) associated with rosacea (acne rosacea). The topical gel has been designated an orphan drug by the FDA for use in this condition. However, it does not have beneficial effects on telangiectasia, rhinophyma, or ocular manifestations of rosacea. Optimal treatment approaches are still being determined, but long-term treatment with topical anti-infectives (like metronidazole) or oral anti-infectives (such as doxycycline, tetracycline, erythromycin, ampicillin, or metronidazole) may help manage inflammatory lesions1.
- Bacterial Vaginosis: Metronidazole Gel is effective in treating bacterial vaginosis (formerly known as Haemophilus vaginitis, Gardnerella vaginitis, nonspecific vaginitis, Corynebacterium vaginitis, or anaerobic vaginosis) in nonpregnant women. The CDC recommends treatment for all symptomatic women, including pregnant women. Pregnant women at high risk for complications of pregnancy should be screened, and treatment initiated if needed. Various regimens, including oral metronidazole, intravaginal metronidazole gel, or intravaginal clindamycin cream, are recommended. Relapse or recurrence is common, and alternative regimens may be used in such situations1.
Off-Label Uses
Metronidazole Gel is used for more than its main purposes with applications, in different skin and gynecological issues that may not be officially sanctioned by regulatory bodies. Metronidazole Gel has been designated an orphan drug by the FDA for the treatment of grade III or IV, anaerobically infected, decubitus ulcers.
