Boniva Ibandronate is used to prevent and to treat osteoporosis in women after the menopause. The dose of ibandronate is 2.5 mg once daily or 150 mg once monthly. This drug can get you more advantages if used with proper care and right instruction.
Use Boniva Ibandronate exactly as prescribed to you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts or for longer than suggested by your doctor. Follow the instructions on your prescription label.
This medicine can be taken either once each day or once each month. Boniva intravenous solution is administered as an injection into one of your veins once every three (3) months. Your doctor, nurse, or other healthcare professional will give you the Boniva injection. Patients can take tablets at home.
The tablet first thing should be taken in the morning, at least 1 hour (60 minutes) before you eat or drink anything or take any other medicine. If you take a tablet only once a month, it needs to be taken on the same day each month and always first thing in the morning.
Take each tablet with a full glass (6 to 8 ounces) of plain water. Do not crush, chew, or suck the tablet. Swallow the pill whole.
After taking a Boniva Ibandronate tablet, patients should not lie down or recline for at least 60 minutes after taking the drug. They should also avoid eating or drinking anything other than plain water. They must not take any other medicines including vitamins, calcium, or antacids for at least 60 minutes after taking the drug. They can choose a different time of the day to take their other medicines. Discuss with your doctor about the best dosing schedule for your other medicines.
Patients can ensure about the improvement in their condition by testing bone mineral density on a regular basis. It is important that you not miss any scheduled visits to your doctor.
Along with treatment with Boniva Ibandronate, patients can include diet changes, exercise, and taking calcium and vitamin supplements in their daily schedule.
In case of overdose, milk or antacids should be given to bind Boniva Ibandronate. Due to the risk of esophageal irritation, vomiting should be avoided, and the patient should not lie down. Dialysis would not be beneficial.
If you are taking daily dose of Boniva Ibandronate tablets and you happen to miss dose, wait until the following morning to take the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not take two (2) tablets in one day.
If you are taking tablets monthly once and you forget to take tablet on your scheduled day anyhow, take it first thing in the morning on the day after you remember the missed dose. Then follow your regular monthly schedule as you were doing in past. If your next scheduled dose is less than 7 days away, wait until then to take the medicine and skip the missed dose. Do not take two (2) tablets in one week.
If you receive Boniva injections once a month and you miss an appointment for your injection, call your doctor for instructions.
Store Boniva tablets at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
