INTRODUCTION

Human body is every now and then infected by a number of worms such as flatworms, pinworms, roundworms, etc. Biltricide (Praziquantel) is an effective medication for treating flatworms or worms belonging to Schistosoma family. As an anthelmintic, Praziquantel is used for the primary treatment of human schistosomiasis through a single dose administration. This white to nearly white crystalline powder prevents the growth and reproduction of worms by inducing severe spasms and paralysis of the worms’ muscles.

Available in 600 mg tablet form, generic Biltricide is found to have a striking effect on patients suffering from schistosomiasis. Various studies on those patients have confirmed that approximately 90% of the damage done to the internal organs as a result of schistosomiasis infection can be recovered within a period of 6 months of taking a single dose of Praziquantel. In addition, Biltricide (Praziquantel) pills with bitter taste can be used for infections caused due to liver flukes and some tapeworms.

Biltricide tablets are intended for oral administration and contain 600mg of Praziquantel which is the active ingredient in this medication. There are also some inactive ingredients that contain corn starch, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, povidone, sodium lauryl sulfate, polyethylene glycol, titanium dioxide and hypromellose.

INDICATIONS AND USAGE

Biltricide (Praziquantel) is mostly indicated for the treatment of infections owing to all species of schistosoma such as Schistosoma mekongi, Schistosoma mansoni, Schistosoma hematobium and Schistosoma japonicum. Secondly, it is also indicated for treating infections due to liver flukes like Clonorchis sinensis. Generic Biltricide is widely prescribed to treat tapeworm infections too. Echinococcosis and Cysticercosis can be treated using Praziquantel therapy.

The dosage administration of Praziquantel for the treatment of schistosomiasis is done thrice a day as a one-day treatment. The dose is generally 20 mg/kg bodyweight at intervals of 4 to 6 hours. Similarly, the recommended dosage for clonorchiasis and opisthorchiasis is 25 mg/kg bodyweight three times a day with an interval of not less than 4 hours and not more than 6 hours.

Generic Biltricide pills are taken with a beverage during a meal. Gulp down the pills straightway, without crushing or chewing. Keeping the pills or some portion of the pills in the mouth for longer can cause vomiting or gagging. Avoid fasting, laxatives and purging during the treatment as they won’t help in your remedy.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

Biltricide (Praziquantel) is contraindicated in patients who have previous history of hypersensitivity to the drug. It is also contraindicated in the treatment of ocular cysticercosis as parasite destruction in the eye may lead to irremediable lesions.

SIDE EFFECTS

Take the help of your doctor immediately and stop taking Praziquantel if you experience an allergic reaction like hives, swelling of your lips, tongue, or face, shortness of breath, closing of your throat, etc. Some of the common and less serious side effects of Biltricide (Praziquantel) include headache, dizziness, abdominal upset, or fever. If these problems sustain for longer period of time, talk to your doctor straightway.

STORAGE

Generic Biltricide (Praziquantel) should be stored at or below 86 degrees Fahrenheit or 30 degrees Celsius room temperature. Keep the pills away from direct sunlight and moisture.
