How to Use Imitrex Safely?
Imitrex Sumatriptan Tablets are used in the acute treatment of migraine attacks with or without aura in adults. In aura, the patient feels flashing lights, a gleam of light, blurred vision, and an odor, the feeling of a breeze, numbness, weakness, or difficulty speaking. This drug is available both in tablets and nasal spray forms to treat migraine headaches. It only treats a headache that has already begun. It doesn’t prevent headaches or reduce the number of attacks.
Using procedure
These tablets should be applied exactly as it was told for you. Use of this drug in larger or smaller amounts is forbidden. Besides, this drug also should not be used for longer than prescribed by your doctor.
Excess use of migraine headache medicine can actually worsen your headaches. For more knowledge patient can follow the directions on the prescription label.
It should be used as soon as you notice headache symptoms, or after an attack has already begun.
Your doctor may advise you to take your first dose of this medicine in a hospital or clinical observation to see how you react to it.
You should take one Imitrex Sumatriptan tablet whole with a full glass of water. Do not split the tablet.
If the headache does not completely leave after taking a tablet and comes back, you can go for a second tablet two (2) hours after the first tablet. The dosage should not exceed more than 200 mg in 24 hours. If the symptoms do not show improvement, patient can contact doctor before taking any more tablets.
If you want to use Imitrex nasal spray, follow instructions for safe and effective use. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any queries. Blow your nose to clear your nasal path before using the nasal spray. Don’t sneeze or blow your nose just after using the spray.
If your headache does not completely quit after using the spray, you can seek medical attention before using a second spray of Imitrex. If your headache goes away and then returns, you may opt for a second spray. The interval period between two doses should be at least two hours. The dosage amount should not exceed 40 mg of Imitrex nasal spray in 24 hours. If your symptoms do not get better, make contact with your doctor before using any more sprays.
Do not treat more than four headaches in one month (30 days) and contact your doctor.
If you are taking Imitrex injection, inject it just under the skin. Do NOT inject it into a muscle or a blood vessel. Do not use it if it contains particles, is cloudy or discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials.
Patients can store Imitrex at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light.
If you have missed a dose of this medication, use it as soon as you remember. On the other hand, if it is almost time for your next dose, instead skip the missed dose. Do not take two doses simultaneously unless your doctor has told to do so.
Imitrex if used in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
