Progynova is prescribed for treatment of menopause, atrophic vaginitis, female hypogonadism, ovarian failure, and osteoporosis. The generic name of this drug is estradiol. It works by replacing natural estrogens in a woman who fail to produce enough estrogen. It works for advanced prostate cancer by antagonizing male hormones.
Progynova should not be applied in patients having some medical problems. So they are required to discuss with doctor about them before taking this medicine, especially of blood clots, active/recent stroke or heart attack, liver disease, undiagnosed abnormal vaginal bleeding, certain cancers (e.g., breast cancer, especially non-metastatic type). There are other conditions that may need earlier doctor attention such as kidney disease, gallbladder disease, abnormal vaginal bleeding, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, blood or blood clotting disorders, epilepsy (seizures), migraine headaches, mental depression, allergies. This drug should be avoided during pregnancy. If you become pregnant or think you may be pregnant, notify your doctor without more ado. The ingredients of this medicine may be excreted into breast milk. Do not breast feed your child before consultation of your doctor.
Patients should avoid smoking as it may add to the risk of blood clots while using this medication, especially in women over age 35. If you are smoking, be sure to discuss this with your doctor. Based on strength, progynova may lead to a patchy, darkening of the skin on the face (melasma). The higher is the strengths the higher is the risk thus resulting in melasma. Sunlight may strengthen this darkening and so keep away from prolonged sun exposure and sunlamps. Seek advice from your doctor regarding use of sunscreens and protective clothing.
Progynova have been reported to cause a number of common side effects. These effects disappear with the adjustment of this drug. But some of them may persist for long. In that case seek medical help. Progynova create adverse impact when used with certain drugs. It may lower their effects or aggravate your diseases for which it is taken. So patients are specially warned to check with doctor before taking, St. John's wort, blood thinners such as warfarin, alcohol, barbiturates such as phenobarbital and secobarbital, cimetidine, clarithromycin
dantrolene, epilepsy drugs such as carbamazepine and phenytoin, erythromycin
grapefruit juice, itraconazole, ketoconazole, rifampin, ritonavir and steroids such as prednisone etc.
