Introduction
Progynon Depot Injection (Estradiol Valerate) is a long acting estrogen available in the form of an injectable solution. The solution is clear, sterile, colorless to pale yellow. It works by replacing natural estrogen in women who cannot produce enough estrogen. It may also be used in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer by opposing the effects of male hormones.
Use
It is indicated in women to help reduce the symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness, burning and irritation, etc. These symptoms occur in the body when there is decreased production of estrogen. It is also used to treat osteoporosis in women due to reduced estrogen levels. This medication is also indicated in women who are not able to produce enough estrogen, for example, due to hypogonadism or ovarian failure. It may also be used by men in the treatment of advanced prostate cancer.
Dosage and administration
Progynon Depot Injection (Estradiol Valerate) is to be administered intramuscularly. The site of administration is the upper, outer quadrant of the gluteus maximus muscle. Always disinfect the region before injecting the medicine. Inject the medicine slowly to minimize the chance of bruising or swelling. For the treatment of symptoms associated with decreased estrogen levels, the usual dosage is 10 to 20 mg, to be injected every four weeks. The drug is then gradually tapered in 3 to 6 month intervals. It is advised that women should be regularly examined when using this medication to rule out the occurrence of uterine cancer, since this drug increases its risk. For treatment of advanced carcinoma of the prostate, the usual dosage is 30 mg or more, administered every one or two weeks. It is advised that the patient should learn all the necessary instructions before taking the injection at home. It is advised to only take the medication as prescribed by the doctor.
Warning
If the patient has an increased risk of blood clotting problems, then it is advised to consult with the doctor before any surgery or dental procedure because this drug is known to increase the problems of blood clot formation. Do not smoke when on this medication.
