Sildenafil Citrate
Sildenafil Citrate is a virility drug in the form of a white crystalline powder which men use to treat their inability to sustain an erection, known as impotence. When taken, for a temporary amount of time the drug normalizes the erectile function of the penis, hence an erection during intercourse can be achieved effectively. It does this by restraining a particular enzyme known as cGMP specific phosphodiesterase type 5. This enzyme is known to prevent and forbid the production of a chemical that causes erections. By taking sildenafil (in the form of a pill), for a temporary amount of time the blood flow to the penis will be more successful. Sildenafil became the primary drug used to treat impotence since it became available in 1998. Sildenafil citrate was also known to be effective to men with certain medical conditions and subsequently after various sorts of surgeries.
Though there are other drugs in the market that are used to treat erectile dysfunction, sildenafil citrate has always been the most used drug. Originally, the drug was used to treat angina (an attack of painful spasms that give the sensation of suffocating) and hypertension (extreme emotional tenseness) but researchers noted the potential of the side affect for this drug and so marketed it to the public. It was hugely popular when it was first released to the public as a treatment for impotence, and sales lead it to exceed $1 billion on just the first few years. In previous clinical studies, 88% of men reported that the medication improved their erections.
As with most drugs, there are side affects with taking sildenafil citrate, though not everyone will experience them. The side affects, as with most medicines affect people in different ways. Some include; headaches, rash, visual disturbances such as blurry vision (some people have complained of seeing everything in a blue tint, known as cyanopsia.) Flushing, nasal congestion and disturbed digestion have also been reported as side affects. More serious consequences for taking the drug are rare, but in some cases heart attacks and strokes have occurred. Priaprism (usually painful condition in which the penis is continuously erects and not related to sexual arousal) is too noted as a side affect.
People on anti depressants may suffer from sexual dysfunction. This could either be because of the medication or because of their illness. This drug does not only improve sexual dysfunctions in men. In 1999, researchers found that female sexual dysfunctions were improved after taking sildenafil as well.
So how exactly does it work? Sildenafil simply acts by blocking the chemical (PDE5) that causes blood to flow out of the penis. As the blood flow regulates, the erection will improve. Most people will find the medication will work after approximately thirty minutes and can continue to work for about four hours.
Sildenafil citrate still remains the most popular impotence treatment and with such a high percentage of men confirming that it works for them, it is known to be the best form of medication for erectile dysfunction.
