Lamivudine
Uses
Lamivudine is used together with other anti-retroviral medicines in the treatment of HIV-1 infection and chronic hepatitis b virus (HBV) infection.
How it Works
Lamivudine is a nucleoside analogue, it works by destroying CD4 helper cells and stopping the HIV virus from spreading. It blocks the action of the Reverse Transcriptase enzyme which helps the virus replicate, this results in destroying the viral HIV chain
Common Side effects
Patients who take Lamivudine may suffer from such side effects;
Fatigue,
Headache,
Insomnia,
Dyspepsia,
Nausea,
Cramps and Abdominal pain,
Dizziness,
Ear and/or Nasal infection,
Sore throat,
Skin rash,
Muscle pain,
Fever,
Chills,
Diarrhoea
Efavirenz
Uses
Efavirenz is an antiretroviral medicine; Efavirenz It is used in the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Efavirenz slows the progress of HIV infections, however it is not a cure, it just controls the HIV virus and prevents it from spreading
How it Works
Efavirenz treats HIV infections by inhibiting viral reverse transcriptase and DNA polymerases. The HIV virus needs An enzyme called RT (reverse transcriptase) to replicate its DNA in order to spread and infect more cells. Efavirenz works by blocking the reverse transcriptase, this then helps to terminate the DNA chain and prevent the virus from multiplying. Efavirenz slows down the HIV Infection progress in the body but it is not a cure.
Common Side effects
Patients who take Efavirenz may suffer from such side effects;
Nausea,
Fatigue,
Vertigo,
Lipodystrophy,
Concentration difficulties,
Rash,
Headache,
Decrease in granulocyte count,
Insomnia (difficulty in sleeping),
Sleepiness,
Vomiting,
Allergic reaction,
Abnormal dreams,
Increased liver enzymes,
Anxiety,
Fever,
Itching,
Difficulty in paying attention,
Increased triglyceride level in blood
Tenofovir
Uses
Tenofovir is used in the treatment of chronic hepatitis b virus (hbv) infection and hiv infections.
How it Works
Tenofovir is an antiretroviral medicine known as nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). Tenofovir slows the progress of HIV infection, but it is not a cure. Tenofovir is used with other medicines in a combination therapy. Tenofovir works by by stopping the virus HIV from copying (replicating) itself. Tenofovir works by stopping the hepatitis B virus from multiplying further, this reduces the amount of the virus in your body.
Common Side effects
Patients who take Tenofovir may suffer from such side effects;
Abdominal pain,
Vesicobullous reaction
Fatigue,
Weakness,
Headache,
Nausea,
Diarrhoea,
Muscle pain,
Pain,
Dizziness,
Depression
